You would like clarification on what to do with the VMs and management console during an upgrade. You are referring to the following from the Install and Upgrade Guide (v4.1.0):
- Planning an Accelerator Upgrade: "If DRS is not available, you must manually vMotion (or shut down) all VMs except the Management Console. Use vSphere Web client to monitor the upgrade. After the first ESXi Host is upgraded, manually vMotion the Management Console to that host to make sure that it remains available throughout the upgrade procedure." (page 20)
- Infinio I/O Upgrade Procedure: "Important: If DRS is unavailable you must manually vMotion (or shut down) all guest VMs except
the Management Console VM. The Management Console VM must remain accessible throughout the upgrade procedure to serve the offline bundle." (page 23)
To upgrade, the ESXi hosts must be turned into maintenance mode where no VM can run. If DRS is enabled, vSphere will do this automatically by moving running VMs around. Without DRS, the host with a running management console VM cannot be upgraded.
The documentation says you can manually migrate the management console back to a host that has already been upgraded so that the rest of the hosts can be upgraded. The management console has to be kept running during the upgrade process.
